Liquid rocket engine (G.R.U.N.T.)
C.A.D.
One of the first stages of the project was to produce a 3-D model of the whole engine assembly, used to support the initial concept. On the right, you can see a representation of that initial model, produced using SIEMENS NX.
-
Researched the main components and geometry of a liquid rocket engine
Reviewed reference designs to understand the combustion chamber, injector, and nozzle
Planned the CAD model dimensions and overall engine assembly
-
Created individual 3D CAD models for the major rocket engine components
Assembled the components into a complete liquid rocket engine model
Refined dimensions and geometry to ensure proper component fit
-
Produced a complete 3D CAD model of a liquid rocket engine.
Developed a model that clearly demonstrates the engine’s major components and layout.
Gained practical experience in aerospace CAD and propulsion systems
CNC
The next step after completing the 3D model was to turn the digital design into a physical component using CNC machining. This process involved preparing the model and selecting the correct settings to accurately manufacture each part.
-
Reviewed CNC fundamentals and common manufacturing processes
Selected appropriate materials, cutting tools, and machining parameters
Prepared CAD models for manufacturing
-
Configured cutting speeds, feed rates, and tool changes
Simulated and verified the machining process before manufacturing
Ensured the cutting surface remained clean during the whole process
-
Successfully translated a digital CAD into a manufacturable component.
Achieved the required geometry and dimensions desired through CNC
Developed experience with CAD/CAM and precision manufacturing.
Testing
After manufacturing the components, the engine was fully assembled and mounted onto our custom-made test stand. Multiple testing methods were then used to evaluate and visualize the flow through the engine.
The system’s performance was tested by using:
Water - Checked the flow through the engine and identified potential leaks
Smoke - Visualized the flow through the engine and nozzle
