Liquid rocket engine (G.R.U.N.T.)

C.A.D.

One of the first stages of the project was to produce a 3-D model of the whole engine assembly, used to support the initial concept. On the right, you can see a representation of that initial model, produced using SIEMENS NX.

CNC

The next step after completing the 3D model was to turn the digital design into a physical component using CNC machining. This process involved preparing the model and selecting the correct settings to accurately manufacture each part.

Testing

After manufacturing the components, the engine was fully assembled and mounted onto our custom-made test stand. Multiple testing methods were then used to evaluate and visualize the flow through the engine.

The system’s performance was tested by using:

  • Water - Checked the flow through the engine and identified potential leaks

  • Smoke - Visualized the flow through the engine and nozzle
